    'Blue and Yellow Macaw.'

This close-up image shows off the exquisite plumage of the breed. The bare white skin around each eye extending to the beak is patterned by lines of small dark feathers. This is one of around 20 species of Macaws. They hail from Central and South America. Many are critically endangered. (Maleny, Queensland. Nikon D7100, 105mm Micro-Nikkor lens, Nikon SB900 Speedlight flash.)

"Cycad and Glasshouse Mountains. 16:10 format."

The Glasshouse Mountains, seen on the horizon, were formed by volcanic activity about 27 million years ago. The lineage of this male cycad (Cycas rumphi - commonly known as a Sago Palm, appearing like one but not a palm) stretches back 270 million years ago. So the cycad wins by a factor of 10. This specimen seen near Maleny is no doubt many decades old, considering their growth rates. And some can be over a thousand years old. Oliver Sacks, the British neurologist who wrote "The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat", was also a naturalist and a life-long fan of cycads. He studied these ancient plants' neurotoxicity and the impact of their leaves (and less so the seeds) on human and animal brains. (Read his book on Guam Disease, "Island of the Colour Blind".) While they are gymnosperms, having seeds exposed to air for fertilisation, as opposed to angiosperms with their enclosed seeds requiring more complex fertilisation, Sacks declares: "One cannot think of these beautiful adaptations without feeling how excellent cycads are, in their own way, and how meaningless it is to see them as 'primitive' or 'lower' plants, inferior in the scale of life to 'higher' flowering plants." They're old, but they're not simple.

The stories this old place could probably tell!

    " 'Hell Hole', Mooloolah River."

Named by locals to keep tourists away? Possibly it's a reference to the small Freshwater Stonefish warning sign I saw on the riverbank - as I was leaving! (Sign image: see my comment below.) Freshwater Stonefish is the common name for the Bullrout and can be found amongst the reedy plants and tree roots in the streams and estuaries from southern New South Wales up to northern Queensland. The Bullrout has an excruciatingly painful sting, like its reef cousin, but hot water breaks up the venom and eases the pain, as does morphine. And medical treatment, that includes the highly effective antivenine, can bring almost instant pain relief. (Near Moololah, Queensland. "Cruisin' the Conondales." Rosie loves to get her tyres dirty. Today she loped along a gem of 4WD trek that penetrates deep into the ancient forests of Conondale National Park, between Kenilworth and Beerwah, high up behind the Sunshine Coast. Along the way, the route passes deep gorges and valleys, crosses pretty creeks and stops at lookouts with fabulous views. A flock of Crimson Rosellas paced Rosie for several hundred metres on one stretch. Red goshawks can sometimes be seen soaring the thermals over the gorges and escarpments. There's much to explore in this rugged region. Rosie is keen to return and seek out the more challenging tracks and take in the sights we missed.
